The EU FP7 funded LCAOS project (2011-2015) utilised nanotechnology-based sensors to create an artificial nose (or NaNose) to provide a new early detection or diagnostic breath test.Associated in vitro laboratory studies have provided proof-of-principle that the techniques being used are able to distinguish between closely related airway epithelial cells with known mutations (Davies et al., British Journal of Cancer 2014, 111(6):1213-21). Potentially they indicate that breath analysis may have some utility in early detection or discrimination of cancers with different mutations.
